CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina (15-7) defeated Wake Forest (15-6),
12-5 in front of a season-high 1555 fans on Saturday afternoon at
Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels used a strong pitching performance from
starter Daniel Moore and five home runs to pick up their first
conference win of the season.
The Tar Heels jumped on Wake Forest starter Tim Morley for six runs in
the top of the first inning. Greg Mangum reached on an error to lead
off the inning, then with one out, Jeremy Cleveland was hit by pitch and
Ryan Blake walked on four straight pitches. Sean Farrell followed with
a grand slam home run to left field, clearing the bases and giving
Carolina a 4-0 advantage. Chris Iannetta and Wes Moyer continued UNC's
offensive explosion with solo home runs to give their starting pitcher
Daniel Moore a six-run lead to work with.
Farrell came through again for the Tar Heels with a two-out run-scoring
single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Chad Prosser singled to lead
off the inning, came around to score on Farrell's fifth RBI of the day
and gave Carolina a 7-0 lead.
The Deacons got on the board with two runs in the top of the sixth.
Ryan Johnson and Brad Scioletti led the inning off with consecutive
hits. Johnson came around to score on a ground ball by Jeff Ruziecki
while Scioletti crossed the plate with Wake Forest's second run when Ben
Ingold grounded into a double play.
Prosser helped the Tar Heels get those runs right back when he crushed
a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning. Prosser's first
home run of the season scored Blair Waggett and Mangum and put Carolina
ahead 10-2.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Iannetta hit his
second solo home run of the game, giving him three total homers on the
season.
Wake Forest put three more runs on the board in the top of the eighth
inning. Jamie D'Antona and Steve LeFaivre were on base when Jeff
Ruziecki launched a three-run homer down the right field line to make
the score 11-5 in favor of Carolina.
The Tar Heels and Demon Deacons wrap up their weekend series at
Boshamer Stadium with the final and deciding game on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
