Box Score
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina (16-7) defeated Wake Forest (15-7),
12-3 on Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels used
another explosive offensive performance in which every starter recorded
at least one hit to win a series against the Demon Deacons for the first
time since the 1999 season. Carolina starter Adam Kalkhof gave up just
3 runs over 5.2 innings to pick up his team-leading fourth victory of
the season.
Wake Forest jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first
inning. Adam Bourassa walked to lead off the game and after a sacrifice
bunt by Ryan Hubbard, Bourassa scored on a single up the middle by Jamie
D'Antona.
Carolina jumped ahead with four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
With two outs, Jeremy Cleveland was hit by a pitch for the fourth time
on the weekend and came around to score on a double by Sean Farrell.
Farrell then scored the Tar Heels' second run on an RBI double off the
bat of Ryan Blake. After a Chris Iannetta single, Chase Younts hit a
two-run double into the right-center field gap, scoring Blake and
Iannetta and giving Carolina a 4-1 lead.
Farrell continued his hot hitting with a two-run homer in the bottom of
the third. Cleveland singled to lead off the inning and scored on
Farrell's team-leading sixth home run of the season which gave Carolina
a 6-1 advantage. With two outs and the bases loaded, Wake Forest second
baseman Chris Getz let a ground ball off the bat of Greg Mangum go
through his legs, allowing Iannetta and Younts to score and giving
Carolina an 8-1 lead.
The Tar Heels' offense continued to pour it on with two runs in the
bottom of the fourth inning. Cleveland walked leading off the inning
and moved to third on Farrell's second double of the day. Blake then
lined a single up the middle which scored Cleveland. Two batters later,
a Younts groundout brought Farrell around to score.
Carolina and Wake Forest traded runs back and forth throughout the rest
of the game, but the Tar Heels' early inning explosion proved too much
for the Deacons to overcome.
The Tar Heels return to action with two games against Towson on Tuesday
and Wednesday. Starting time for both games is 3 p.m.
