Wake Forest Misses Cut for Final Round at NCAA Championship

The No. 12 Wake Forest men's golf team posted a 17-over 305 and missed the cut for the final round by ten strokes at the NCAA Championship in West Lafayette, Ind.

The Deacons finish the season ranked 12th in the country. The squad recorded two teams victories on the season, the General Jim Hackler Championship and the NCAA Central Regional.

Chris McCartin carded his best round of the championship with a one-over 73 in the two-day third round which was suspended Friday due to inclement weather. The senior was playing in his last event as a Demon Deacon.

McCartin shot 84-77-73 (+18) for the tournament and posted three birdies in the third round.

Fellow senior Webb Simpson shot a six-over 78 in the third round. Simpson ends his season with two individual victories including the ACC Championship individual medal. Simpson was also named the ACC's Player of the Year and led the Deacs with a 70.3 stroke average entering the NCAA Championship.

Simpson shot 73-77-78 (+12) in the three rounds of the championship.

Brendan Gielow carded a four-over 76 for the third round and finished the tournament with a 79-71-76 (+10).

Gielow, a sophomore, finished the season with the second-lowest stroke average on the team at 72.4 per 18 holes.

Junior Dustin Groves posted a six-over 78 Saturday. Groves finished the three rounds of the championship with an 80-79-78 (+21).

Sophomore Travis Wadkins carded a nine-over 81 in the third round. Wadkins finished the championship with an 82-88-81 (+35).

UCLA currently leads the 15-team championship field at 24 over par. Clemson was the lone ACC school to make the cut for the final championship round.
