FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - All seven Wake Forest competitors ran personal bests as the Demon Deacons finished 10th out of 33 strong teams at the Chile Pepper Festival 10k here Saturday.
No. 11 UTEP (64 points) held off host and No. 2 Arkansas (77) for the team title at the 18th annual event. Abilene Christian finished third, followed by Alabama and Lamar.
Nicodemus Naimadu of Abilene Christian won the individual crown with a time of 28:22.8, just ahead of Arkansas' Peter Kosgei (28:33.7).
Wake Forest was led by senior Brad Wharton, who finished 64th and nearly eclipsed the 31-minute mark with a time of 31:00.6. Junior Chris Catton came in just behind Wharton, in 68th place, with a time of 31:05.1.
Deacon junior John Compton took 72nd place (out of 288 competitors) in 31:08.3. Freshman Marcus Dillon was impressive, coming in 88th in 31:27.6.
Jared Hill ran a time of 31:48.6 to finish in the top half, at 111th. Senior Ottie Ray Kerley followed in 117th place in 31:52.1. Senior Joel Conn finished in 31:55.3 and 120th place.
The Deacons are tuning up for the Oct. 28 ACC Championships in Charlottesville, Va.
