Wake Forest Downs NC Central 74-35 in Exhibition Action

Nov. 7, 2007

Final Stats

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team wrapped up exhibition play with a 74-35 win over NC Central at the Joel Coliseum on Wednesday night.

Corrine Groves, Mekia Valentine and Alex Tchangoue all scored in double figures for the Demon Deacons, with sophomore Valentine leading the charge at 12 points.

The squad's lone senior Christen Brown shined in the exhibition contest, posting 13 rebounds, bettering her current career high by four. The Dalton, Ga. Native also put up nine points and forced two turnovers during her 19 minutes of play.

The Demon Deacons started the contest on a 12-2 run and didn't allow the Eagles to crack the double digit mark until the clock hit 1:14 in the first half.

Despite the large lead, the squad also picked up 14 turnovers during the first 20 minutes of action.

"We have to take better care of the ball," Head Coach Mike Petersen said.

"We had way too many turnovers. But we also did a lot of things right. Our effort, our energy and our intensity on defense is right. Once you have those things it's possible for everything else to fall into place."

The Demon Deacons settled down in the second half, limiting turnovers to eight and holding the Eagles to just 22 points.

The game wraps up Wake Forest's preseason. The Deacons opened exhibition play with a 67-50 win over Anderson College, combining for 141 points between both contests.

"I think everyone feels we're a lot better this year," Valentine said. "Everyone on the team knows their roles now, which makes a huge difference. We're a lot stronger outside the court and that makes us a lot stronger on."

Demon Deacons will officially begin the 2007-08 regular season with USC Upstate on Tuesday, November 13 at the Joel Coliseum. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
