Wake Forest vs. Indiana
Led by third-year head coach Mike Petersen, Wake Forest opens its 2006-07 campaign against Big Ten opponent Indiana Friday in the Women's Sports Foundation Classic in Lexington, Ky. Tonight's game will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The Demon Deacons are coming off a pair of exhibition wins over Lenoir-Rhyne and Anderson University last week. Indiana also went 2-0 in its exhibition season, defeating Indianapolis and Northern Kentucky last week.
WSF Classic
The Women's Sports Foundation Classic features teams from four of the top conferences in the nation: Wake Forest in the ACC, Indiana in the Big Ten, Washington State in the Pac-10 and tournament host Kentucky in the SEC. After facing the Hoosiers on Friday, the Demon Deacons will take on either Kentucky or Washington State on Sunday. The Women's Sports Foundation Classic is in its fifth year after being founded by Billie Jean King. Last season Temple won the tournament, defeating Michigan in Eugene, Ore.
Last Time Out
Wake Forest went 2-0 in its exhibition season last week. The Deacs defeated Lenoir-Rhyne 66-46 on Wednesday and then downed Anderson University 64-54 on Friday. Against LRC, Wake jumped out to a 21-3 lead and never looked back. The Deacs had to fight off a pesky Anderson squad before eventually pulling away in the second half. Both contests were played at the Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem.
Sophomores Shine in Exhibition
Wake's three returning sophomores shined in the Deacons' two exhibition wins last week. Forward
Corinne Groves, the team's leading returning scorer and rebounder, posted a double-double against Lenoir-Rhyne. Groves tallied 10 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds in the win. Point guard
Yolanda Lavender led the Deacs with 11 points and five assists. Guard
Alex Tchangoue turned in a double-double to lead Wake against Anderson. Tchangoue scored 15 points and recorded 12 rebounds, both team-highs. Lavender also chipped in 13 points in the victory.
