No. 3 Deacons Host ACC/Big Ten Challenge to Open Season

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The third-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team will open the 2008 season this weekend when they host the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Kentner Stadium. Wake Forest will begin play on Saturday, August 30 at 11 a.m. against No. 5 Iowa. The Hawkeyes have played the first match of the season with the Demon Deacons for the past six years. Wake Forest holds a 4-2 edge in the schedule-opening series, taking losses in 2002 and 2007.

The Deacons will continue action on Sunday when they play No. 9 Michigan at 11 a.m. Wake Forest faced Michigan twice in 2007, taking a 3-2 win in Ann Arbor on August 26 and followed with a 3-2 win on November 11 to advance to the NCAA semifinals.

Top-ranked North Carolina will be the second Atlantic Coast Conference member in the challenge. North Carolina took home the NCAA tournament title in 2007, posting a perfect 24-0 record for the season. The Tar Heels will play Michigan on Saturday at 2 p.m. and finish out the Challenge with Iowa on Sunday at 2 p.m.
